Look at some examples of typography on the web
In small groups, determine which letters create the foundation for the majority of characters in the alphabet. (For example, "o" creates "b", "d", "p", "q", etc ) using some font samples as reference
Introduce P1 at more length
Review html / css
For Jan 29, Tuesday
Read Computed Type by Christoph Knoth, 2012 and add a response to the week 2 document.
For P1, create three unique directions for your typeface. Begin by sketching the fundamental letters we discovered in small groups. For your typefaces, find the list of fundamental characters within that genre, and choose 3-4 unique characters to draw (either upper or lower case). For instance, if one's direction was a grotesque I may draw the "E", "B", and "C".
Conceptually and formally, each direction should be uniquely different from each other β make sure you define the following qualities for each: width, contrast amount, weight, stroke endings, construction (lowercase or uppercase).
While sketching, consider how each typeface would exist as code and in the browser space. (Do this in InDesign or Illustrator and create a PDF to discuss on Tuesday.) Design with each typeface with a purpose in mind and be prepared to explain these concepts on Tuesday.

For Thursday
Finish and upload your CSS Still Life. Link to it from your class website. For the selected direction, complete your typeface (in Illustrator, Figma, etc.) as much as possible. Here are the characters I would like you to have by then:
either:
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
or:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
as well as:
0123456789 (numbers)
.?!,ββ (punctuation)Print out your type on 2 tabloid sized pages, one page with the type at a text size and the other page with a display size

For Thursday
Create two unique proposals (using InDesign, Illustrator, Sketch, etc.) for the website your typeface will live on. Each proposal should include at least three sections: specimen, showcase, state-change. We should be able to visualize your website proposal by looking at these three pages. How can your website's focus not only reinforce but push forward the concept of your typeface? Upload the sketches to your class website as pngs and link them from your homepage.
Make your designs for a 1200px by 800px window, and show how the site will interact across at least 3 frames per direction (you'll have 6 images total). The designs should show how you'll display: specimen, showcase, and state-change. Be prepared to discuss your proposals in small groups.
